Crayon Art Painting Attempt…

I love Pinterest and I often find myself spending a couple of hours a day browsing the DIY and Crafts category as I am watching TV. I think I may have a new obsession! Many of the things I “Pin” on Pinterest are crafty things that I think are pretty easy to do. Recently my friend and I decided we were going to set aside one day a week to just be crafty! I love the idea but Pinterest is taking up so much of my time!! I guess that’s not a bad thing haha…

Last Friday we started our first project. We were inspired to try and make our own crayon art by Unsimple Living on Pinterest. I couldn’t wait to get started!

All we needed was crayons, hot glue, canvas and a hair dryer. We ended up actually using foam poster board we found at Wal-Mart for under $2. If we ever do this project again I do suggest using canvas as the melting crayons on the poster board tended to run fast and easily out of control.

Step One – Peeling the Crayons (Optional)

I say this is optional because it isn’t really necessary to do this step. You can leave the paper on if you like. I wanted to peel the crayons for my project because I thought the overall outcome would look better without the paper. My partner in crime “conveniently had to run an errand” and left me to peel most of them by myself! By the way this part was totally not fun…

Step Two – Glue Crayons on the Canvas

Arrange your crayons on the top of your canvas or what ever material you are using with the pointed end facing down. You can choose any combination of colors and patterns that you like. That’s what I love about this project, everyones will turn out different! Make sure all crayons are glued securely, if not the next step may cause some of your crayons to come loose and fall.

Step Three – Hair Dryer Time

Set your board/canvas at an angle where it will not slide or fall. Be sure to have some newspaper, cardboard or some other material under it in case your crayons decide to drip all the way down. Plug in your hair dryer and get to work! Try different angles, speeds, and motions to get your desired look. I will warn you, it may take a while to melt these crayons. Just be patient and have fun with it!

Our Finished Product

Now I will say we may have over done it. We spent hours melting and remelting different sections which caused all the different colors to run together and create new colors, but I actually kind of like it. What do you think? Now I just need to find a good place to hang it up!

I love your crayon art! I have been wanting to try this myself but found most of the ones I saw to be more appropriate for a kids/teens room. This one looks like something I would want to hang up in my home!

I know, I felt the same way when I was looking at other versions of crayon art. I decided to try something different, it’s hanging up in my living room and I love it!
